Brexit Passport News: Everything you need to know

Brexit Passport News: Everything you need to know

For businesses planning to travel to the EU, you’ll need to be sure of all the new post-Brexit passport changes before you set off on your trip. Since reaching the end of the Brexit transition phase, the UK Government has introduced a host of different passport rules, which started on 31 December 2020. These updates apply to all British passport holders, so it’s vital you check them before arranging your next business trip.

To make sure you’re fully prepared and can successfully plan for your next corporate trip overseas, we’ve covered the most recent Brexit passport news here in this article.

Read on to find out the details!

Check your passport expiry date

Before you can board a business flight to the EU, there are a few things you’ll need to check on your passport to ensure it’s valid for travel. The first one is to find out your passport renewal date, as it’s recommended that on the day of travel you have at least six months or more left on your passport. This should include at least three months after the date you intend to leave the EU country you will be visiting.

Your passport also needs to be less than 10 years old on the day after you leave. This means you may need to renew your passport before travelling to avoid getting stuck, unable to travel to or from the EU. Remember, if your current passport was renewed before the last one expired it may have some extra months added to its expiry date. However, these additional months won’t count towards the minimum period needed to travel.

It’s also worth noting that:

  • The above conditions don’t apply to travel to Ireland, so you can continue using your passport so long as the expiry date hasn’t yet passed.
  • If you still have a burgundy passport with ‘European Union’ on the cover, don’t panic – it will still be valid until the day it expires.

For travel to and between most European countries, you’ll find that these rules apply. You can check before travelling here.
